The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely designing a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be approached in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
