Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using these treatments must be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
