Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
