Comeback Daniil Medvedev Claims Maiden Trophy in Over Two Years

Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's 21 titles have been achieved on hard surfaces

A resurgent Medvedev claimed his maiden title for over two years with a win over opponent Moutet in the competition title decider.

Medvedev, a ex- top-ranked player, has had a challenging period, achieving just one win at the Grand Slams and experiencing a setback at the New York tournament.

His varied form on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serve in especial - resulted in him falling of the elite rankings and eventually separating with long-term trainer Gilles Cervara.

Presently collaborating with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has gradually advanced in the recent weeks - climaxing in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over challenger Moutet.

This represents the player's first title since the Italian tournament and first on a hard surface from March of the previous year.

Success also signifies he has secured 21 championships at 21 different events.

"For the first time I have attended a tournament with my two daughters at once, so to secure a championship is really nice," commented tennis professional the champion.

"This victory is in honour of my second daughter my daughter, because the initial championship I got when my first daughter my daughter was delivered was for her."

The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his past six title deciders, including in that event earlier this year.

The player's retrieving play style and recurring reactions on the tennis court had caused commentators to doubt if his ability to perform at the top level was finished.

But the player has implemented adjustments in the past month, making an effort to come to the net and compete assertively, reinforced by an enhanced service.

He recovered from a deficit in the first set against the difficult opponent, securing 4 of the final five points to gain the advantage.

Both players traded service breaks in the following set before Moutet, striving for his maiden tour title, took control to create a third set.

He saved 4 initial opportunities in a close final set before the champion broke to that score to secure the win.

Fittingly, he clinched the title with a point at the net, with Moutet unable to handle a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
